The NSW Drug Summit agreed that some communities and families are looking for leadership and positive ideas for dealing with illicit drugs. It became evident that the community as a whole needs to better understand, discuss, take ownership of the issue and the solutions, and be empowered to address its causes and impacts.
The NSW Government Plan of Action was developed following the 1999 Drug Summit. The Plan of Action is the Government's response to recommendations made during the Drug Summit.

Upper Hunter Drug Action Group To help the community become more aware about drug issues, the Upper Hunter Drug Action Group have developed this website. It contains information about the Upper Hunter Drug Action Project, information about drugs and local services, and links to other related sites.
The European Commission Community action programme on the prevention of drug dependence (1996-2002) Information about a five-year (1996-2000) community programme for the prevention of drug dependence in Europe.
Community Action for Drug Prevention (CADP) This site offers links and specialized tools for community prevention professionals, parents, teachers, and students. The site also incorporates features to help communities manage drug prevention efforts and develop custom school web sites. This website is from the US and is sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
Community Partnerships Kit A resource for groups wishing to undertake community action to prevent illicit drug use or address drug use where it occurs. It was produced as part of the Australian National Drugs Campaign.
The Community Partnerships Initiative As part of the National Illicit Drug Strategy funding has been allocated to the fourth funding round of the Community Partnerships Initiative. The Community Partnerships Initiative will contribute to the prevention of and reduction of illicit substance use by yourn people, by motivating communities to work together to tackle the drug problem and by fostering relationships between governments and the broader community.Funding will be provided to community groups to stimulate action to address local issues of concern related to drugs. Joseph Rowntree Foundation Exploring community responses to drugs This report reviews the role of community in official drugs policy. It looks at how the community might be involved and identifies the key ingredients for effective intervention and how community involvement develops. UK Government The National Drug Strategy - a guide for local partnerships 2007/08 - The National Drug Strategy represents the Government’s commitment to provide resources and legislation to tackle the problems related to drug use Tackling drugs to build a better Britain A cross-government website to support the National Drugs Strategy and the work of Drug Action Teams A rock and a hard place: drug markets in deprived neighbourhoods The work was undertaken in late 2000/early 2001 and focused mainly on markets for heroin and crack cocaine. The report concludes that it will be difficult to regenerate neighbourhoods without tackling drug markets at the same time. This report is from th UK Government. 2002 Tackling Drugs as Part of Neighbourhood Renewal It is an essential part of any programme to regenerate the poorest and most deprived communities.
